Goals
A mobile app is a useful tool that brings together all of Fannie Mae's consumer information, making it convenient to access on the go. It especially benefits low-income consumers who primarily use their phones, as it helps them navigate the home-buying process, which is a key goal for Fannie Mae.

Visual Center & Concept explorations

A look and feel that evokes ease and trust

Collaborated with the Senior UI Designer and Creative Director to present concept options for the product's look and feel. Agreed with the client on a "visual mood" that conveys calmness, approachability, and trustworthiness. The chosen direction builds on recognizable Fannie Mae elements and color scheme, emphasizing lighter tones and refined accent colors. Brand elements include iconic Fannie Mae blue, with touches of yellow and neutral colors.

Identifying Key Features

The homebuying journey made easy

After exploring and testing different designs, I began creating the final designs and documents to give to the tech team. These are the screens that ended up in the Today feed. I created a set of adaptable cards for the feed and other parts of the app. I also organized the feed into different sections that focus on providing quick and snackable content.

Enhanced Tools and Features for New Homeowners

How might we enhance this experience? This phase was focused on improvements to the homebuyer experience and providing new tools for new homeowners including homebying tools, maintennce projects for homeowners and a homeowners feed.

Home Improvement Projects and Tools to Maintain Your Home

After multiple rounds of revisions and getting the green light from the client and stakeholders, we gave the development team the last versions of the designs and documentation. Take a look at the My Tools and My Projects screens below.

The Design System

Building the design system for the Fannie Mae app was an ongoing process that came together in a more thorough way at this stage. This was a collaborative effort within the design team and some of my direct contributions are documenting color use and iconography .

Conclusion

The homebuying process can be overwhelming and having resources available that support people in that journey is key. The app was well received by the Fannie Mae team, the app’s reviews improved on the app store and the overall sentiment amongst testers was positive.

One of the biggest lessons I took from the project was to always think beyond the “tasks” the user should acomplish and really take a moment to think and ask “how does this happen in the real world, what is missing and what can be better?”
